Sustainability

Buildings account for over 20% of Singapore's emissions, making greening key to our targets. Since 2006, we've worked towards low-carbon built environment through green building masterplans. Read more about the various measure and initiatives to achieve a sustainable Built Environment for all.

Built Environment Decarbonisation Technology Roadmap

BCA and Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), with support from A*STAR, have jointly developed a roadmap which identifies close to 70 key technologies and strategies. This roadmap will guide developers/building owners to adopt the market ready solutions identified in the roadmap to decarbonise their building projects. The roadmap will also guide research and innovation efforts towards achieving the Singapore Green Building Masterplan’s “80-80-80” targets by 2030 and work towards our longer-term target for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Singapore Green Building Masterplan (SGBMP)

The Singapore Green Building Masterplan was developed to push the boundaries of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in buildings through our targets of "80-80-80 by 2030", namely 80% buildings green by 2030, 80% new developments with Super Low Energy standard from 2030, 80% energy efficiency improvement from 2005 for best-in-class buildings by 2030.

Legislation on Environmental Sustainability for Buildings

Singapore’s built environment sustainability regulations are underpinned by mandatory requirements that drive energy efficiency and environmental performance across both existing and new buildings, including those undergoing major additions and alterations (A&A). These requirements are legislated under the Building Control Act and are enforced by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

Green Mark Certification Scheme

The BCA Green Mark Certification Scheme was launched in January 2005. It is Singapore’s green building rating system designed to evaluate a building’s environmental impact and performance. It provides a comprehensive framework for assessing environmental performance of new and existing buildings, promoting sustainable design, best practices in construction and building operations.

Green Buildings Innovation Cluster (GBIC) Programme

Set up in 2014, the Green Buildings Innovation Cluster (GBIC) is an integrated research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme that aims to accelerate the development and deployment of promising energy efficient technologies in buildings.

Sustainability Awards

The Sustainability Awards recognised developers, building owners and individuals who made outstanding achievements in environmental sustainability in the built environment. The awards evolved over time to better reflect the industry's growing commitment to sustainability, as shown under past award section below.
